Understanding EYLF: A Parent's Guide
What is the Early Years Learning Framework and how does it shape your child’s learning?
You may have heard your child’s centre mention the EYLF, but what does it actually mean for your child? The Early Years Learning Framework is Australia’s national guide for early childhood educators. It shapes how centres plan, teach, and document your child’s learning from birth to five years.
The EYLF is built around five learning outcomes that describe what children should be developing during their early years. These aren’t rigid academic goals — they’re broad areas of growth that recognise the whole child.
Outcome 1 is about identity — children feeling safe, secure, and supported. When your child confidently walks into the centre each morning and engages with their peers, that’s Outcome 1 in action. Outcome 2 focuses on connection to community and understanding of the world around them, including respect for diversity and the environment.
Outcome 3 is about wellbeing. This includes physical health, emotional regulation, and developing independence — like learning to put on their own shoes or managing frustration when something doesn’t go their way. Outcome 4 covers confident and involved learning: curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, and the disposition to keep trying.
Outcome 5 is communication. This goes beyond talking — it includes listening, early literacy, numeracy, and using technology and creative arts to express ideas. When your child draws a picture and tells you a story about it, they’re demonstrating Outcome 5.
So how does this affect your child’s day? Educators use the EYLF to plan intentional learning experiences. When they set up a water play station, it’s not just about fun — it’s designed to support specific outcomes like problem-solving (Outcome 4) and wellbeing (Outcome 3). When they document your child’s learning in reports and stories, they connect observations back to these outcomes.
As a parent, you don’t need to memorise the five outcomes. But understanding that there’s a thoughtful framework behind your child’s daily activities can give you confidence that their time at the centre is purposeful. The reports you receive from your centre often reference these outcomes, showing you exactly how your child’s play connects to their development.
